Day 1 (29 May) [Manchester – York]
- Arrive at Manchester airport
- Coach Transfer to York
- R&R (Evening) – Ghost tour of York
The renowned ghost tour of York brings tourists down the cobbled path of well preserved medieval streets, particularly Shambles, the most famous medieval street in England. One can marvel at the famous architecture and culture of medieval times while experiencing England’s most haunted city.
Day 2 (30 May) [York] (UK Bank Holiday)
- Morning: York Minster Cathedral & City Walls
- The largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe
- A two-hour guided tour and workshop in the York Minster. The workshop considers the building primarily in the context of European Medieval art. As well as examining the transition from the Romanesque to the Gothic styles and the subsequent development of the latter, we will also consider the iconography of the age, whether in stained glass, carving or manuscript illumination.
- A guided tour of the city walls – The most intact city walls left in England, with some sections of the wall dating back to the Roman times. To learn more about the Romans when they were in York and how the English continued to work on the Roman foundation. Learn more about the War of the Roses through a talk.
- Afternoon: Seminar workshop at the University of York with Professor Judith Buchanan (1.20 – 3pm)
The seminar workshop will be on Shakespeare’s Henry IV. Concentrating on just Act 1 and Act 2, Professor Buchanan will give an insight into Shakespeare, Elizabethan Theatre, and how dramatic texts can be transformed into film adaptations
- Evening: Yorkshire Museum & the Museum Gardens
Five new galleries now showcase some of Britain's finest archaeological treasures and many rare animals, birds and fossils, in exciting new displays. Some of the special galleries feature Roman artifacts and relics from Medieval York.
Day 3 (31 May) [York – Stratford-Upon-Avon]
- Morning: Seminar workshop at the Centre of Women Studies in York (10.20 – 12pm)
Awarded Top University in the UK for its research, York has several renowned centres of research, one of which being the Centre of Women Studies. The workshop will include sharing by professors of the evolution of women literature and the changes in the portrayal of women in Literature.
- Afternoon: Seminar workshop at the University of York with Professor Judith Buchanan (1.20 – 3pm)
- A seminar workshop on British film of the 1940s (post war moment) to give students an insight into film as a literary genre. The choice of culturally specific films will also provide students an introduction to British culture, which is prominent in the texts they are studying for ‘A’ Level. After which, we will make our way to Stratford-Upon-Avon.
2. Arrive in Stratford in the evening around 8pm.
Day 4 (1 Jun) [Stratford-Upon-Avon]
- Morning: Shakespeare’s Birthplace & guided tour of the city
- A well maintained house that is believed to belong to William Shakespeare’s father and where William Shakespeare grew up.
- Take a guided tour of the city and get insights into Shakespeare’s hometown and the inspiration for his works.
- Afternoon: Attend a workshop at the Shakespeare Centre (1-3.30pm)
The workshop combines several components, from an introduction to Shakespeare to a talk on Richard III and The Taming of the Shrew, a text which the students are studying for their ‘A’ Level. Tailored for ‘A’ Level Literature students, the workshop will explore the issue of intertextuality, influence of culture on text and the performance aspect of Shakespearean drama. Head into London after that.
- Evening: Make our way to the River Thames
Students to take a night walk along the River Thames and admire the night scenery of the river against the backdrop of Big Ben, London Eye and the Westminster Abbey, which forms the setting for a significant portion of British Literature.
Day 5 (2 Jun) [London-Cambridge]
- Morning: Visit the Cambridge University Press
One of the most renowned publishing presses in the world, a representative at the Cambridge University Press will give students an insight into the publishing process and how the literary market works.
- Afternoon: Guided tour around Cambridge
This tour will let students have a glimpse of the various renowned colleges and the history of Cambridge. Students will also get to speak with representatives from the Singapore Society in Cambridge to get a glimpse of student life in the university
- Evening: Watch ‘Hamlet’ at the Globe Theatre (7.30pm)
Day 6 (3 Jun) [London]
- Morning: Attend a workshop on women in Medieval Literature at Royal Holloway University (Tentative)
Attend a workshop by Professor Cath Nall on the roles and portrayal of women in Medieval Literature and how some strains of women stereotypes continue to exist today.
- Afternoon: Panoramic Sightseeing Tour of London & the British Museum
1. A panoramic sightseeing tour given by a blue-badge guide to see the famous landmarks in London
2. British Museum is the best museum in the world where 4000 year old Pharaohs enjoy a busier afterlife than they planned for and where Karl Marx meets Buddha. The African collection is the world’s largest and the best in terms of range and quality.
- Early Evening: Madame Tussauds Museum
A world renowned wax museum with a history dating back to more than 200 years ago. At a time when news was communicated largely by word of mouth, Madame Tussauds’ exhibition was a kind of travelling newspaper, providing insight into global events and bringing the ordinary public face-to-face with the people in the headlines. Priceless artifacts from the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars brought to vividly life events in Europe which had a direct bearing on everyday lives
- Evening: Watch ‘Wicked’ at the West End Theatre (7.30PM)
Day 7 (4 Jun) [London]
- Morning: Take a river cruise down the Thames ending in Westminster Abbey
The river cruise covers most of the important sites of London, from the Parliament, St Paul’s Cathedral, Globe Theatre to the Big Ben. The river cruise will end at Westminster Abbey and the Parliament Square for the students to explore.
- Early Afternoon: Globe Theatre guided tour
Visit the Globe Theatre for an insight to Elizabethan theatre. Take a guided tour of the Globe Theatre and learn more about the play during the Elizabethan times and how it is different nowadays.
- Rest of the day: R&R & Shopping before taking the flight back home (2215 hrs) and arriving in Singapore on the morning of 5 Jun.
